My reliable car broke.

Exaggerating slightly but yeah the Twingo has a couple issues. Telling everyone how reliable it is has jinxed me. The drivers side brake rubs when Im driving straight, gets louder when i turn the wheel to the right, but stops when I turn left. Odd. Took everything apart, greased and cleaned up everything. Came back within a week. Need to check that again.

But the big problem right now is the steering creaks, and I mean loud. Its also starting to bind up a little. So tomorrow morning is a day of checking strut top bearings and every joint in the steering system. To be fair the way I drive this thing sometimes I’m not surprised the suspension is wearing prematurely.

The Kia Soul’s brakes have this dust shield in the back that is spot welded together. There is a smaller disc that sits inside the rotor and a larger disc that sits outside. Along that seam of the little disc it likes to rust and expand. This causes the brakes to make a grinding noise that increase as I turn. Could be something similar.

Theyre gone now :( I’ll probably repaint them at some point. I returned it to stock to look presentable for prospective landlords and new job.

I dont recall the brakes on this having a shield at all but I will have a look.

Nooo, let’s hope this is not contagious. My Twingo does sometimes make a belt/alternator/tensioner related sound though, but I’ve had it checked and they couldn’t find anything.

Maybe the brake noise is the caliper being slightly loose, we had that problem on Nova, which used Twizy hubs, which are somewhat similar looking.

The steering noise could come from the steering box, though it could be literally every joint like you said.

Caliper shouldnt be loose Ive had it off and tightened it correctly. If its the steering rack Im in for a world of hurt. Those electric racks aint cheap.

Wait, does the Twingo have an electric steering rack? Why didn’t I know such thing!

Yeah electric. Im in two minds about electric to be honest. It is great to be rid of all the lines and pump (which leak on my BMW and are a royal pain in the arse) but the actual racks are quite expensive compared to hydraulic ones.

Should’ve bought an Espace. No seriously, in the past 200,000 miles ours has needed literally no repairs apart from an exploded Turbo due to shitty drivers (It has to deal with two learners).

Theyre few and far between here in the UK. Most have been heavily abused too.

Yeah, Eliminating leaks is a big plus, though I agree on the cost issue with you.

I’m interested in how it works exactly though, so I guess I’ll do some nosing around this weekend.

Usually a motor is part of a unit with the rack then it uses a variety of sensors for wheel position and usually a system to vary assistance depending on vehicle speed.

Ours has been heavily abused and continues to be abused. It wasn’t though seven years ago when we bought it.

Many of them here seem to be on deaths door.

Wait, you mean you painted them again? Surely the easier way of doing that would be some hubcaps?

I brushed on some black paint for the places the hubcaps dont cover and put the caps back on.
